Why Do We Need to Remember?

I have begun a year long program designed to support a deeper dive into life's meaning.

How? Why?

And what does this actually mean?

This course is based on Stephen Levine's book "A Year to Live."

We began with a profound teaching of "The 5 Remembrances."

  • I am of the nature to grow old.

I cannot escape growing old

  • I am of the nature to have ill health.

I cannot escape illness.

  • I am of the nature to die.

I cannot escape death.

  • All that is dear to me and everyone I love will change.

There is no way to escape being separated from them.

  • My actions are my only true belongings.

My actions are my only continuation.

We're asked to reflect on these daily.

It is said that living and dying are entwined our spiritual practice.

That we can't live fully unless we live into our suffering and dying as well.

This practice is not new. It is challenging.

It is a macrocosm of meditation practice.

This is why we practice. To help us with the foundational truths of life.

I look forward to exploring the nuances of this most esteemed journey.

How would you live if you knew you had a year to live?
